Hey Ray!

Just a hungry manta ray chasing some plankton

Just about an hour drive from the hotel were the docks for a Manta ray excursion. The experience was pretty spectacular and we lucked out seeing three together. This is also the first time I used my waterproof cellphone camera underwater - only finding out later there is a video mode...

Manta Rays are active 20 hours a day. Feeding on plankton - and plankton attracted to light - all us snorkeling folk hung onto 'light buoy's'.

Light buoy: you can see the plankton gathered under the lights.

Needle fish

At first we were just surrounded by needle fish, but it didn't take long for the mantas to arrive. Amazing how they glide through the water effortlessly.

We learned that while they don't have any defense mechanism persay, they are able to swim 25 - 30 mph, making them somewhat untouchable when need be.

Close encounter hello.

Gills on the backside.
